Age Eligibility Calculator

Check your age for upcoming maritime intakes.

Calculate your exact age on course commencement date for upcoming Merchant Navy intakes (Feb / Aug).

Why Your Age Matters for the Merchant Navy

Joining the Merchant Navy involves strict regulations set by the Directorate General of Shipping (DG Shipping), and age is one of the most inflexible criteria. For most undergraduate maritime programs like the Diploma in Nautical Science (DNS), B.Sc Nautical Science, and B.Tech Marine Engineering, candidates must typically be between 17.5 to 25 years of age at the time the course commences.

The reason for this strict age bracket is twofold. First, maritime training involves rigorous physical and mental preparation, and companies prefer younger cadets who can adapt easily to the demanding lifestyle at sea. Second, a cadet's career progression from Junior Officer to Captain takes several years of sea time and examinations; starting early ensures a long, productive career for the sponsoring shipping company.

How Intakes Work

Unlike traditional colleges that have one intake per year, maritime institutes often have two primary intakes: February and August. Your age is calculated exactly on the first day of the month your chosen intake begins. This means you might be perfectly eligible for the February intake but miss the cutoff for the August intake by just a few days.

Our age calculator uses the exact start dates of upcoming intakes to determine your eligibility down to the month. If you fall within the eligible age window, don't delay your preparation—enroll in our DNS Sponsorship Coaching Course to secure your sponsorship before your target intake. If you are approaching the upper age limit, it is highly recommended to seek professional guidance from Mallu Navigators to target companies that are more flexible with age criteria.
